Overview

Map Hunting is a scavenger hunt that can take you around the world without leaving your home. When you start a hunt you will be given a link to open up Google Map Street View. You will “drive” the streets of the city looking for clues and providing answers to questions based on those clues. The hunts area arranged by location and difficulty. Hunts can last between 10 – 30 minutes depending on difficulty and the driving length of the hunt.

Start a Hunt

We offer some free hunts to let you get an idea of the how this works. *Link to free hunts* Registered users will have access to our catalog of MANY hunts. You can search for hunts by State, difficulty, or user ratings. When you start a hunt you will be given a link to Google Earth street view facing the direction that the hunt will start. Clues will appear in a separate window. The final clue will require an answer based on the final location of the hunt. There may be intermediate clues that require an answer as well.

Hunt Difficulty

Hunts are separated into three different difficulty levels. Beginner Hunts are set up to have clues that are pretty straight forward. You won’t need to zoom in too much unless instructed to by the clue. Most of the clues are easily visible as you drive thru the hunt. Intermediate Hunts have clues that can be more difficult than Beginner Hunts. You will need to zoom in for a few clues even if you aren’t specifically told to zoom in. Expert Hunts have clues that require you to zoom in on signs, t-shirt logos, billboards, trucks, or anything possible. The clues may also be a little more abstract.

Clues

Clues can be anything that you see along the way. They can be as obvious as “go past the umbrella” or they can require some deduction. An example would be “Go past the sign that has the name of a famous David Bowie song” and you would see that we would expect you to go by a sign with the word Heros on it.

The clues can be seen from the road that you are driving on.

Hints & Locations

Sometimes the clues can be difficult, and you may wonder if you are on the right track. Hints are occasionally included for clues that involve deduction. A clue may be “Go past the sign that is a play on a Top Gun quote”. The hint will let you know that the sign you are looking for is “We feel the need for high speed”. Show Location will give you a link to the location of the clue. You should be able to see the clue from this spot. You may need to zoom in to see the clue.

Rate a Hunt

Members will be able to rate the difficulty and enjoyability of the hunts. This will offer other members an idea as to what hunts they would like to try next. Hunt Difficulties are rated on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being easiest and 10 most difficult. Hunt Enjoyability is ranked on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being the not enjoyable and 10 be the best hunts.

Correct or Comment on a Hunt

While we check all the hunts prior to publishing, there are still chances for errors. There may be another answer for clues that we did not see or Google Street View may have updated and signs, trucks or other clues may not be visible anymore. The designers are also engineers so spelling/grammar errors are bound to occur.

Create a Hunt (Yearly Subscriptions Only)

Yearly subscription members are able to create their own hunts for others to try. Members enter in the clue and Show Location links for each clue. You can include Hints or require an answer for the clue. When members submit a hunt, the hunts are reviewed prior to publishing. Other members can run member created hunts hunts and provide feedback on difficulty and enjoyment of the hunt.
